Local people have told us they often find it difficult to know who to call or where to go when they feel ill. As a result, we have produced a short video, online information and downloadable leaflet to outline people’s options in the borough. If your organisation can help to distribute our leaflets to your clients, service users or networks, please contact us.

Our research indicates that people need clear information about what services are available and how to access them. New services such as LIVI have launched, and the ways we access some well-established services – especially A&E and Urgent Care Centres – are changing.

  • NHS111 – Phone 111 or go to 111.nhs.uk for medical advice and information. They will help you get the care you need and can make you an appointment with your GP or Urgent Care Centre.
  • Your local pharmacy – Can give you advice, help you to look after yourself and treat minor conditions. Visit our Find a service page, to find your nearest pharmacy.
  • Your GP practice – Most practices are using a triage system either by phone or online. You will need to explain the problem you have, and the support you need, so practice staff can arrange the necessary care or treatment – by phone, video or in person. You can find out the address of local services here.
  • LIVI – a video consultation with a trained GP who has access to your medical records. You need to download the app and register to join the service. Find out more here.
  • Urgent Care Centre At North Tyneside General Hospital (Rake Lane), urgent care provides medical care for minor injuries and minor illnesses which are not life-threatening. You should ring 111 first. Read more here.
  • Accident and Emergency at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (Cramlington) or the Royal Victoria Infirmary (Newcastle). Ring 999 or 111 first. The NHS is asking please ‘don’t just turn up’ unless your condition is life threatening.
